Small Scale, Big Impact: The World of Bio-Nano Interactions

The bio-nano interface constitutes the physical boundary where biological components meet a man-made or natural nanomaterial. While the physics and chemistry of those surfaces and interfaces determine bio-nano interactions, the biological machinery allows cells to actively react to nanostructures. Wet-lab experiments, in particular imaging, can help us to study bio-nano interactions. The lecture series encompasses the basics on fabrication and characterization of nanostructures, a characterization of how cells can interact with nanostructures, various applications in medicine, e.g., as sensors or in prosthetics, and a discussion of ethics and regulatory aspects.
